| What about those blue eyes??? Moon's foals will not have blue eyes unless the mare carries the gene for blue eyes. His are due to the fact that he carries TWO copies of the cream dilution gene, the gene that makes palomino, buckskin and smokey, but he can only pass on ONE copy, and one copy does NOT make eyes blue. The same is true for his pink skin, his foals would only have pink skin under the white markings, just like any horse. |
| Moon is NOT an albino. There are no albinos in the equine world. Moon is a Double Dilute, which means he recieved one cream dilution gene from his palomino dam and one cream dilution gene from his palomino sire. When this happens coat, skin and eye color are lightened TWICE. It also means that Moon is homozygous for the cream gene that creates palomino and buckskin, and he ALWAYS gives one cream dilution gene. One gene dilutes sorrel to PALOMINO, and black or bay to BUCKSKIN or PALOMINO (but with other cremellos, smokey black is a possibility). Moon has been tested at U.C. Davis and is also homozygous for the *agouti* gene, the gene that restricts black to the mane, tail and legs, creating buckskins. Because Moon is also homozygous for agouti, it means if your mare contributes black, you will get a buckskin, every time. This is something not found in all cremellos. And that is straight from the horses mouth. |
